RaceB4Race
A seismic shift in the field.
RaceB4Race is a cross-institutional scholarly community for scholars and students of premodern critical race studies. Bridging many traditional disciplinary divides, RaceB4Race not only creates innovative scholarly dialogues, but also fosters professional development and structural change within the many fields of premodern studies.
I have led the publicity and marketing for RaceB4Race since its founding in 2019. My strategic and creative marketing and branding deployments led to international acclaim for RaceB4Race and contributed to the rise of ACMRS as the leading premodern studies center in the world.
Inclusion in knowledge
Despite the political turmoil around teaching the history of race and racism in education settings, RaceB4Race has always been about inclusion and community building. Our marketing follows this same ethos—the development and professionalization of scholars, students, artists, and community members is the priority, and the deep understanding of complex histories only informs and supports everyone.
A branding Russian doll
Here is how I like to think about it: RaceB4Race is a product of ACMRS, which is a branch of Arizona State University. The brand reflects its higher overarching brands while maintaining its own personality.
Because RaceB4Race is also an annual, large-scale event, it revolves around a different theme each year. Our goal was to make the branding for each symposium feel consistent but well-suited to its theme.
